PROPERTY SOLUTIONS - managing service charges

Andrew Morley
Business Development Director

Welcome

It’s been an exciting start to the year for both PSL and the commercial property sector as a whole.

The latest Loughborough Report is due to be released next week and we are pleased to include an overview of the results in this newsletter.

We are also keenly awaiting results of the London Business School ‘Options for Change’ research and will be able to provide you with the results of this in the coming months.

At PSL we are extremely pleased to announce the appointment of our new chairman; Alan White who takes over from Ed Costelloe.  Alan has been a non-executive director at PSL for the past two years and his role as chairman is going to be key to providing further direction to the company in what looks set to be the most exciting year yet.

We also include in this issue an update on PSL's Portfolio Services Manager, Richard Bacon's fundraising trip to Cambodia in January.

As usual we welcome your feedback and opinion on our newsletters, so please contact us if there is anything in particular you would like further information on or if you would like to contribute to future newsletters.

That’s all from me for now.  I look forward to updating you further in June.

The latest study will show that there has been little improvement in service charge standards since the publication of the RICS guidelines in April 2007.

The Report looks at ten years of data on over 400 buildings and compares Jones Lang LaSalle’s annual OSCAR reports with the Loughborough Reports. This year’s Report will also comment on the issue of VAT on service charges and how this impacts on tenants in the financial service sector who make up a large proportion of the users of multi-let offices in the UK.

In our last newsletter we told you about Property Solutions (PSL) Portfolio Services manager, Richard Bacon who was taking two weeks’ annual leave in January to visit Cambodia with Mission Direct, a UK based Christian charity. In total Richard raised £3,000 for this worthwhile cause, with much of this coming from his colleagues at PSL who pulled out all the stops to help him raise vital funds.

Richard was in Cambodia to assist in building a new house for the Sistros family in one of the rural villages in the Phnom Penh province.

Property Solutions Ltd (PSL) is pleased to announce the appointment of Alan White as chairman.  He will succeed Edmund Costelloe who retires from the position after five years and will continue as a non-executive director.

Alan has provided the company with strategic consultancy advice for the past two years in his previous role as non-executive director, where his knowledge and experience in the property sector has been integral to promoting effective management of occupied property.  He will continue with this focus in his new position, with particular ongoing emphasis on the effect of leasing and service charges on the performance of businesses.

Following the success of our ‘The Truth About Service Charges’ seminar last year we are going to be holding another seminar at the Institute of Directors (IOD), London on 30 September.  Once again we are expecting a large attendance from key stakeholders in the industry.

The ‘Options for Change’ study is progressing well and according to London Business School there has been a good level of response.  The results of the study will be published later in the year.
